    Summary

The Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation and Affiliates seeks innovation and "the next big thing" through funding of grassroots efforts.  It also looks to expand existing programs that are proven to work. The Corportation's strategy is to identify programs we can help scale and spread, so more students of color, low-income students, and first-generation students get to college and graduate from college.

    Great Lakes funds three initiatives:
    • Exploration - Grants to learn more about ideas and approaches that hold promise for helping more students complete college.  Potential grants are considered for the following questions: Will the program improve completion rates? Will it impact a significant number of students? Does it have potential on a larger scale?
    • Validation - Grants to to take good ideas to scale.  Grants are awarded to researchers who rigorously evaluate a program. Research works to answer one of two questions: Is the program as effective as preliminary data suggests? Or if already proven effective, can it be as successful in another location?
    • Scaling - Grants pave the way to lasting change.  Awards typically run for multiple years and are designed to give partners time to institutionalize financial support without disrupting the services provided.
Applications to each of these initiatives are announced periodically.  New grant opportunities are announced on the Grant Calendar.

    Additional Information

All funding is guided by a set of core principles:
    • Level the playing field so more students of color, low-income students, and first-generation students get into and through college.
    • Focus on two key barriers: lack of academic preparedness at the pre-college level and threats to college completion for students enrolled in higher education.
    • Track meaningful results for students served, so we can learn what works, what doesn't, and continually refine our efforts.
    • Value all forms of higher education equally, whether programs lead to two- or four-year degrees or other credentials.
